Lors d’un récent événement organisé par The North Face et AS Adventure à la salle d’escalade Klimzaal Blok, j’ai eu l’opportunité de rencontrer Siebe Vanhee, un célèbre grimpeur belge connu pour ses exploits en « big wall ».
Darkness before Dawn
Siebe était présent pour présenter son dernier film, « Darkness before Dawn », réalisé par Alex Eggermont, qui raconte sa tentative d’ascension de la Dawn Wall, considérée comme la grande voie la plus difficile du monde.
Siebe est un grimpeur expérimenté qui a déjà gravi de nombreux « big wall », c’est-à-dire des parois de plus de 400 mètres où les grimpeurs doivent souvent dormir sur la paroi. La première tentative de Siebe sur la Dawn Wall l’a intimidé, car chaque relais représentait un nouveau défi dans sa progression vers le sommet. Bien qu’il ait déjà gravi de nombreuses grandes voies en Europe, il n’a pas encore réussi à atteindre le sommet de la Dawn Wall, mais cela l’a motivé à y retourner encore plus fort.
Des projets plein la tête
Pendant la soirée, Siebe a partagé avec le public la genèse de son aventure et ce qui l’a poussé à relever ce défi. Nous avons également eu l’occasion de discuter avec lui de ses projets en cours, notamment son retour sur la Dawn Wall l’année prochaine, ainsi que sur son expédition en Patagonie sur le Big Wall « Riders on the Storm ».
Pour atteindre ses objectifs, Siebe travaille dur pour devenir plus fort, en s’entraînant en endurance et en grimpant des voies très difficiles pour augmenter sa force brute. Il souligne également l’importance d’avoir un équipement fiable et de bien gérer son sac pour pouvoir transporter tout le matériel nécessaire lors de ses expéditions. En ce qui concerne la gestion du stress, il préfère se concentrer sur de petites étapes pour voir des progrès plutôt que de se mettre trop de pression.
Enfin, nous avons discuté de l’impact du dérèglement climatique sur les milieux montagnards qu’il explore. En tant que grimpeur, Siebe se sent concerné par cet impact et s’efforce de limiter son empreinte environnementale lors de ses voyages en montagne. Il encourage chacun à faire des petits gestes pour protéger l’environnement.
En conclusion, rencontrer Siebe Vanhee a été une expérience inspirante et instructrice. Sa passion pour l’escalade et sa détermination à relever de nouveaux défis peuvent inspirer de nombreuses personnes. Siebe retournera sur la Dawn Wall l’année prochaine pour atteindre, il l’espère, le sommet de cette grande voie mythique.
